Cultural Connections: Norwegian Spoon Carving Webinar Online

December 14, 2025

2-3pm

Join artist and instructor Liesl Chatman online for the first in a series of three Vesterheim cross-cultural webinars exploring spoon carving techniques from around the world. Liesl will focus on the art and cultural significance of Norwegian spoon carving, using examples from the Vesterheim collection.

Liesl Chatman is an engaging and inspiring speaker! As a traditional folk artist, teacher, and amatuer folklorist, Liesl is on a mission to rekindle the accessible and enjoyable traditional decorative folk art of kolrosing (think of kolrosing as tattooing wood). Kolrosing is an endangered craft—it is officially “red-listed” in Norway. As part of her mission, Liesl has travelled to Sweden and Norway to teach kolrosing and to explore its lore dating back to medieval and Viking times. A passionate teacher, she has won numerous awards over the course of her 35-year career in education. She was the 2023 Folk Artist-in-Residence at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and a 2024 American Scandinavian Foundation Fellow.

The Cultural Connections series of webinars fosters perspective about the way Norwegian and Scandinavian handcrafts are part of a global community. Vesterheim is excited about these programs and hope they create a forum for discussion around cultural practice and offer a platform for cultural exchange.
