Lawn Chair Night in Downtown Decorah: Kelly Hunt, featuring Beth Watts Nelson

July 11, 2024

6-7pm

Free. Family friendly. Almost every Thursday night this summer in Downtown Decorah!

Join for an evening of music on Washington Street, right outside of Impact Coffee, with Kelly Hunt & featuring Beth Watts Nelson! This Lawn Chair Night is sponsored by Harman Realty.

The daughter of an opera singer and a saxophonist, Kelly Hunt was raised in Memphis, TN amidst a motley mélange of musical influences ranging from Rachmaninov to Joni Mitchell to Mississippi John Hurt. She grew up singing in choirs, poring over poetry books, and writing her own music as a matter of course, first on piano then 5-string banjo. After being introduced to the banjo in college while studying French and visual arts, Hunt began to develop her own improvised style of playing, combining old-time picking styles with the percussive origins of the instrument. After college, Hunt embarked on a rambling path through career pursuits in farming, French breadmaking, and visual arts, ultimately landing in Kansas City, where she would go on to write and record her debut album, Even the Sparrow.

Lawn Chair Night has been a program of Downtown Decorah Betterment for more than 25 years. It’s now made possible by DDBA in partnership with Visit Decorah Tourism, Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce, and Impact Coffee. The 2024 season is generously supported by top sponsors AJ Realty and Oneota Community Food Co-op… along with 15 supporting sponsors for specific nights throughout the season. This free, public event features both local and regional talent.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a chair and their toe-tapping’ shoes. In 2024, two performances will take place outside of the Winneshiek County Courthouse and 8 will be on Washington Street outside of Impact Coffee. For the Washington Street shows, attendees are encouraged to purchase a beverage at Impact Coffee, the event partner.

In the event of rain, the Courthouse events will be cancelled or moved to a different location and the Washington Street events will be moved inside Impact Coffee. Rain announcements will be made on Facebook’s Visit Decorah page and the Downtown Decorah Betterment page.
