Nobel Peace Prize Nominee Dr. Steinar Bryn to Lead Conversation on War in Ukraine

April 4, 2023

Can we end the war in Ukraine with dialogue and negotiations, or with more and stronger weapons? Hear how one of the most experienced dialogue facilitators in Europe, Dr. Steinar Bryn, answers that question on Tuesday, April 4 at 7 PM in the Pulpit Rock Brewery Co. front event room.

A repeat Nobel Peace Prize nominee, Dr. Bryn is the current King Olav V Scholar in Residence at Luther College, working closely with the Torgeson Center for Nordic Studies and the Center for Global Learning. A Norwegian native, Dr. Bryn travels internationally to speak and teach on the importance of maintaining dialogue in conflict situations. He is well acquainted with both the U.S. and Ukraine.

Dr. Bryn has been connected to the Nansen Academy in Lillehammer, Norway throughout his working life, serving as a teacher, director, research scholar, and long-time leader of the Nansen Dialogue Network, a dialogue and reconciliation project. Nansen Dialogue was developed through dialogue work in the Nansen Academy, named after Fridtjof Nansen, a great Norwegian humanitarian who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1922.

Dr. Bryn has designed and implemented several hundred dialogue meetings between people in deep conflict in the Balkans, Ukraine, and beyond. As Snežana Jonica, a prominent member of Montenegro’s Parliament said in her nomination of Steinar for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2016, “the Nansen Dialogue Network has worked steadily, persistently to build up trust and confidence in local communities in the most war torn communities in Europe after WW II.” There are now several Nansen Dialogue Centers working with areas in conflict, and the dialogue work is studied and practiced throughout the world.

April 4th’s talk with Dr. Steinar Bryn is sponsored by the Northeast Iowa Peace and Justice Center, a 501c3 non-profit organization creating initiatives to promote peace, human rights, local resilience, and social and environmental justice. The Northeast Iowa Peace and Justice Center aims to incubate new ideas, offer resources and serve as a catalyst for action in Northeast Iowa. Learn more and get involved at https://neipjc.org.
