Passport to Other Cultures: Local Stories of the Hmong Diaspora

Join us Thursday, March 30th at 6:30pm as we delve into the history of the Hmong migration.

Take in our vibrant, beautiful exhibit of story cloths, ornaments, costume pieces, textiles, artifacts, art, and history timeline panels. Temporary loans courtesy of La Crosse Public Library, Hmoob Cultural and Community Agency, St. Paul Hmong Cultural Center, Harmony Area Historical Society, and private area collectors.

Local cultural historian Yia Vue will take us “through the history of Story Cloths, textiles, and artifacts as they pertain to the migration of the Hmong”; Tria Meier shares her personal stories; and Rev. Mike McElwee and Ann Delwiche of La Crosse Christ Episcopal church share the history of “The Friendship Program,” and its important role in the story of the Hmong relocation to America, and Tria Meier shares her views on retaining and celebrating Hmong culture in our area.

Schedule

  • 6:30 p.m. – Viewing of Pop-Up Hmong Diaspora exhibit in the Welcome Center
  • 7 p.m. – Seating and Presentation in Immigrant Hall with our special guests
  • 7:45 p.m. – Question and Answer time
  • 8 p.m. – Sample Tria Meier’s Hmong signature dish of sticky rice and sausage. You will also be able to sample traditional Hmong egg rolls, soup, and a dessert from Yang’s Market/Soula’s Deli.
