October 2nd is the 45th anniversary of the Wild and Scenic Rivers and National Trails Acts, two of Stewart Udall’s notable accomplishments while serving as U.S. Secretary of the Interior. Udall was an essential link between the conservation movement of the early 20th century and the emerging environmental movement of the 1960s and 1970s. The film highlights Udall’s role as the first prominent voice for environmental justice in the federal government. Serving in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, Udall was a central figure in the era that brought forward the Peace Corps, Lady Bird Johnson’s beautification campaign, and concerns about the increasing industrialization of agriculture—events that provided vital foundations for Paul Johnson’s work.

This October 2nd event will also include a sneak peek at two ongoing projects focused on Paul’s life:
On November 7, Paul W. Johnson In His Words: An Oral History will be released. Editor Ellen Macdonald will share a first glimpse of her conversations with Paul in 2019-2020; and in 2024, a collection of Paul’s writings, speeches, and talks will be published. Curt Meine, Senior Fellow with the Aldo Leopold Foundation and editor of the collection, will share an update on the project and his thoughts on how this material shows the development of Paul’s ideas on conservation, agriculture, and land ethics.
