Velkommen to Nordic Fest 2025: Where History and Heritage Come Alive

Each summer, Decorah, Iowa comes alive with the sounds of fiddle music, the aroma of fresh lefse, and the vibrant colors of Norwegian bunads. That can only mean one thing: Nordic Fest is here! Held in the heart of Winneshiek County, this beloved festival has been a Decorah tradition since 1967—but 2025 marks an especially significant milestone. This year, Nordic Fest joins national and internal partners in commemorating the 200th anniversary of Norwegian emigration to North America, making Nordic Fest 2025 a truly once-in-a-generation experience.

A Celebration Rooted in History

Norwegian immigration to the United States began in earnest in 1825, when the sloop ship Restauration carried 52 passengers from Stavanger, Norway, to New York. These early pioneers laid the foundation for what would become a rich and enduring Norwegian-American culture—one that thrives today in places like Decorah.

Decorah itself is a cornerstone of that legacy. Home to Vesterheim – the National Norwegian-American Museum and Folk Art School, home to Luther College – the first college in the U.S. founded by Norwegian immigrants, and an overall proud center of Norwegian-American heritage, Decorah is the perfect place to honor this bicentennial year.
