Summer in Decorah: Lawn Chair Night Music Series

A Small-Town Tradition with Big-Hearted Vibes

When summer arrives in Decorah, Iowa, the rhythms of life shift into something a little slower, a little sweeter—and undeniably more musical. One of the community’s most beloved traditions is Lawn Chair Night, a weekly series of free outdoor concerts that brings locals and visitors together under the open sky.

Lawn Chair Night in Downtown Decorah Iowa

A Thursday Night Tradition

Held on Thursday evenings throughout the summer (June-August), Lawn Chair Night transforms Downtown Decorah into a welcoming concert venue. Whether you’re a fan of bluegrass, jazz, folk, or hometown marching bands, the series features a wide range of musical acts that reflect the heart and soul of the region.

The charm is in the simplicity: bring a lawn chair (or a blanket), find a patch of grass or a stretch of sidewalk, and settle in for an evening of great music and community spirit.

Venues with a View

Concerts are typically held in one of two downtown locations:

  • Winneshiek County Courthouse Lawn / 200 Block of West Main Street:  A classic setting with a relaxed, picnic-friendly vibe.

  • Washington Street near Impact Coffee / 100 Block of Washington Street: A more intimate street venue that gives downtown a vibrant, block-party feel. When music is here, head inside to Impact Coffee to purchase a wide array of beverages!

Each location offers its own charm, with music starting in the early evening—perfect for grabbing dinner from a local eatery or sipping a drink from one of the nearby establishments.

Music for Everyone

Lawn Chair Night is all about variety. Performers include regional bands, folk duos, jazz ensembles, and local legends. It’s not uncommon to see families dancing, kids blowing bubbles, and long-time neighbors catching up between songs.

Whether you’re discovering a new artist or enjoying a hometown favorite, every show feels like a celebration.

Community-Driven and Free

Thanks to the efforts of the Downtown Decorah Betterment Association (DDBA) and a host of local sponsors, Lawn Chair Night remains completely free to attend. It’s a testament to what small communities can do when they come together to support the arts and one another.

In case of rain, organizers often move the event indoors (typically inside Impact Coffee), keeping the show going regardless of the weather.

Why It Matters

Lawn Chair Night isn’t just about music—it’s about connection. It’s about seeing familiar faces, making new friends, and pausing for a moment to enjoy the beauty of a summer evening in Decorah. It’s a reminder that joy can be simple: a good tune, a comfy chair, and a shared sense of place.

So next time you’re in Decorah on a summer Thursday, grab your lawn chair and head Downtown. The music’s already playing—and there’s a spot just for you.
