START DOWNTOWN

One of the best things about a few days in Decorah? You can park the car for free and start exploring.

Decorah’s Downtown District is known for its charm, historic properties, and walkability — making it the perfect spot to start getting to know Decorah AND to return to repeatedly during your 48 hours in the area. Located on and around Water Street, the Downtown District is home to more than 100 small businesses including retail locations, restaurants, grocery stores, coffeeshops, museums, and more. It will be hard to resist popping into local shops like Ace Kitchen Place and Jubilee, where you can find everything from kitchen finds and gifts to clothing and locally made goods.

When you’re ready for a bite to eat, consider a local favorite! T-Bock’s Sports Bar & Grill, Mabe’s Pizza, The Hungry Ginger, Don Jose Family Mexican Restaurant, and Koreana each bring something different to the table, from burgers and pizza and Mexican favorites to Asian-inspired and Korean dishes. With plenty of options in and around downtown, there’s no need to overthink it—just pick what sounds good and settle in for a meal.

And don’t forget to leave room for something sweet — or something cold to drink. Sugar Bowl, Twisted Gnome and The Whippy Dip each offer their own take on a classic ice cream stop, whether you’re craving a cone, sundae, or a little nostalgia. For local beer, head to Pulpit Rock Brewing Company to sample a rotating selection of craft brews in a laid-back setting. With plenty of opportunities to stop for a bite, a scoop, or a pint, exploring Decorah can be just as much about tasting your way through town as it is seeing the sights.

Downtown Decorah also has a way of giving you something to stumble upon. Depending on the time of year, you might find live music, book readings, lectures, workshops, festivals, pop-up events, or other gatherings happening throughout the downtown district. In the summer, Lawn Chair Night turns Washington Street into an easygoing outdoor music venue, with live performances, drinks and plenty of space to settle in and enjoy the evening. It’s the kind of local event that makes a visit feel less like a checklist of things to do and more like you’ve found your way into the rhythm of the community.

ADD SOME DRIFTLESS ADVENTURE

Of course, there’s a reason people come to Decorah beyond downtown. Step just outside the Downtown District and you’ll find the hills, bluffs, wooded trails, waterways and winding roads that make the Driftless Area so distinctive.

Hike to a waterfall, bike the Trout Run Trail, paddle the Upper Iowa River, or take a scenic drive and see where the road leads. Places like Dunning’s Spring, Pulpit Rock Overlook at Will Baker Park, and Palisades Park make it easy to add a little adventure without straying far.

TAKE A SHORT DRIVE BEYOND DECORAH

Have a little more time? Take a short drive beyond Decorah city limits and discover even more of Winneshiek County and Northeast Iowa.

History buffs can explore Fort Atkinson State Preserve, the Bily Clocks Museum in Spillville, or the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum in Burr Oak, while nature lovers can venture toward Effigy Mounds National Monument, Yellow River State Forest and other scenic areas throughout the Driftless landscape.

Whether your perfect weekend means a little adventure, a lot of good food, or simply time to slow down together, Decorah makes it easy to find your own pace. In 48 hours, you might not see it all—and that’s part of the reason to come back.
