Bentwood Box Class with Hal Bitzer

August 21, 2025 - August 24, 2025

9am-5pm

Bentwood boxes are made by wetting a strip of wood and then bending it around a form to dry into a curved shape. We will begin with learning the history of the “typical” Scandinavian bentwood box and its different types and uses. You will learn how to select the wood, make a mold, wet the wood, and bend it on a form. Different types of lacing will be discussed. Lastly, you will learn how to construct and fit the bottom and lid in place on your finished box.

This course will be taught by Hal Bitzer who started creating “things” out of wood in the 1990s and has been creating ever since. Hal has studied kolrosing, chip carving, and bentwood box construction, and has been creating shrinkboxes with some of the best instructors from Norway and Sweden.

Scholarships including local standby option are available. Find information here.
