Blacksmithing 101: Forging Fundamentals Class with Cody Myers

August 27, 2026 - August 30, 2026

9am-5pm

This course is designed to build up a foundation to begin your journey into smithing steel. In this class, you will learn about shop safety and equipment and how to heat, pound, and shape steel in the forge. Students will learn different skills and techniques to create hooks, leaves, spoons, forks, chisels, and other projects as time allows. If you have ever been curious about smithing and want to get set in the right direction, this class is for you. Growing up in the North Woods with parents who were timber framers and log home builders, Cody has always led a hands-on lifestyle. While traveling abroad for years, he took a great interest in the way that people lived long ago and how those traditions still survive in the world today. Cody has taught blacksmithing and bladesmithing for 13 years. He has primarily focused on Damascus steel bladesmithing and axe making. Bringing hammer to hand and steel to anvil, and turning billet to knife he is grateful to share in teaching the art he loves. Vesterheim offers a 60% discount for in-person class tuition on a space-available standby basis to any year-round resident living within 50 miles of Vesterheim. Students will be notified about the availability of an opening in the class 21 days before the starting date of the class period. Discounts do not include materials fees. If local area residents want a guaranteed place in a class, they must pay regular class tuition. The local standby option is supported by Decorah’s Depot Outlet.
