Cultural Connections: Decorative Norwegian Carving on the Tylldal Chair Webinar

June 6, 2026

10-11am

Lara Reisigl Domeneghetti presents a free online webinar From Birch to Walrus Tusk: Reconstructing the Tylldal Chair across Media and Territories. Through practice-based reconstruction and comparative material analysis, this presentation examines the Tylldal Chair as a birch “ivory” throne — linking sculpture from the Nidaros Cathedral in Norway, walrus-tusk carving, and portable ecclesiastical furniture. The focus lies on tools, surfaces, and how craft knowledge traveled across media, workshops, and North Atlantic territories. Register for the free Zoom link here. Lara Reisigl Domeneghetti has over 12 years of training in the fine arts and traditional handcrafts, beginning her journey as a decorative painter and sculptural woodcarver in Italy in 2007. She went on to earn a BA in Drawing in Germany and an MA in Visual Arts and Post Graduate Diploma in Historical Carving in London, where she researched Medieval Scandinavian art and produced a 1:1 replica of the Tylldal chair. Her research has been published in both English and Norwegian, and she is regularly invited to lecture and demonstrate her craft at schools and museums internationally. Now based in Norway, Lara combines hands-on making with cultural and philosophical inquiry, exploring not only how objects are made but why they matter.
