What drives people to test their limits on the water? Is it the thrill of adventure, the pull of history, or the simple joy of paddling into the unknown?
In Pushing the River, award-winning writer Frank Bures explores the triumphs and dangers of life on the water through gripping true stories. From a harrowing escape from the 2011 Pagami Creek Fire to a long-lost canoe race that shaped modern paddling, Bures captures the river’s power to challenge, inspire, and transform. With tales of resilience, rivalry, and mystery stretching from the Boundary Waters to the Mississippi, this book is a must-read for anyone drawn to the rhythm of the river and the adventures it holds.
Frank Bures is a writer whose work has appeared in Harper’s, Outside, The Atlantic, and many other publications. His stories have been included in The Best American Travel Writing anthologies and won other awards. He is the author of The Geography of Madness, editor of Under Purple Skies, and producer of audio history tours for VoiceMap.
