Hallingdal Style Rosemaling Class with Lise Lorentzen

This class is designed for painters with prior rosemaling experience who are ready to deepen their work in the Hallingdal tradition. Students will decorate a traditional Mora stool using classic Hallingdal elements — bold color contrasts, balanced symmetry, dramatic flowers, and strong line work. Emphasis will be placed on refining brush control, developing confident S and C strokes, and strengthening shading, highlighting, and veining techniques characteristic of Hallingdal. Instruction will include demonstrations, discussion of layout and design balance, and guided work time as students adapt the pattern to a functional wooden surface. The class will be taught using acrylic paints. Participants should be comfortable with basic strokes and lining, as this project focuses on advancing technique and control while working on a larger, dimensional piece. Lise Lorentzen’s love of rosemaling began at the age of 11 during her first class at the local Sons of Norway Lodge. Her rosemaling can now be found throughout the United States, Canada, and Norway, and she has had the great fortune to attend classes with many renowned Norwegian and American rosemaling artists, including an apprenticeship with Eldrid Arntzen (Vesterheim Gold Medalist) in 2009. Lise has been awarded nationally for her work, including a Vesterheim Gold Medal in 2024. She continues to share rosemaling through her commission pieces, galleries and shows, social media, and teaching. Lise has a B.A. in art history and elementary education and an M.S. in special education. A former educator in New York City, she now resides in Maryland with her husband, three children, and two dogs.Vesterheim offers a 60% discount for in-person class tuition on a space-available standby basis to any year-round resident living within 50 miles of Vesterheim. Students will be notified about the availability of an opening in the class 21 days before the starting date of the class period. Discounts do not include materials fees.
