Introduction to Hardanger Embriodery Class (Online) with Shan Rayray

August 4, 2026 - August 18, 2026

3-5pm

Hardangersøm is Norwegian drawn thread work. In this online class, you will learn basic Hardangersøm stitches as you make an ornament. Instructor Shan Rayray will take you step-by-step through each of the stitches (Cutting and Woven Bars (Wrapping), and Fringe Stitch.) The class will consist of three sessions over three weeks. Each session will be accompanied by a video tutorial that you can refer to between class sessions as you complete each step.  This online course runs for 3 Tuesdays, August 4-18 (3:00-5:00 pm CT). Shan Rayray has taught Hardangersom for the Scandinavian Cultural Center at Pacific Lutheran University and for her Sons of Norway Lodge in Tacoma, Washington. Shan is a council member at the Scandinavian Cultural Center who helps with the collection’s Hardanger embroidery collection. She has been serving as president of Embla Lodge #2, Daughters of Norway since 2023. Shan learned the art at a young age the traditional way from her aunt when she was visiting from Norway. Her aunt spoke only old Norse and no English. Since then, Shan has made numerous pieces and provided restorative repair work for others. She has demonstrated Hardangersom at the Washington State Fair. Her work has placed four times at the Washington State Fair and was part of the Socially Distanced, Creatively Connected exhibit at Vesterheim in 2021.
