This four-week online course offers an engaging introduction to the ins and outs of Norwegian pronunciation. Together, we’ll explore the rhythm, stress, and melody of spoken Norwegian and take a closer look at what makes its pronunciation unique—especially compared to English. Students will learn the basics of the Norwegian sound system, discover how speech sounds are made, and practice using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) to read and write pronunciation symbols. We’ll also listen to examples from different Norwegian dialects and talk about what these variations reveal about language and identity. By the end of the course, students will understand the key features and patterns of Norwegian pronunciation and apply this knowledge to improve their own speaking and listening skills. This online course meets for 4 Sundays, August 2-23 (6:00-7:15 pm CT). Lianna Torres is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Scandinavian Studies at the University of Washington. Most recently, Lianna received her Master’s Degree in Ibsen Studies at the University of Oslo in Oslo, Norway. Prior to that, she received her B.A. in Nordic Studies at Luther College. Throughout her time as a student and in Norway, Lianna developed a deep love for Norwegian language, literature, and culture. She has over seven years of Norwegian teaching experience including Vesterheim classes, private lessons, and, most recently, an Intermediate Norwegian language course at Luther College. Lianna loves nothing more than using her education and experience to teach others about the beauty of the Norwegian language and culture. Upon completion of her Ph.d., Lianna is eager to continue her lifelong career teaching and researching in the field of Scandinavian Studies.
