Rosemaling in the Os style with Nancy Schmidt

June 25, 2026 - June 28, 2026

9am-5pm

In this class we will explore the Os style of rosemaling, which is from the west coast of Norway south of Bergen in Hordaland. Os is a fun style of painting. With this project we will be using a bright color palette. You will learn what the characteristics are that define the Os style and what makes it unique. We will discuss the elements of design that are used in Os. The project is an Os style tray, and the woodenware is also characteristic of that area. The instructor will have other designs available or gladly help you make a design of your own. She will encourage students to try designing, which helps to understand the style better. Her biggest goal is to help you understand the Os style! Nancy Schmidt graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater with a degree in art education and has worked in advertising design. Nancy teaches rosemaling in the United States and has taught in Japan many times. She continues to study rosemaling in the United States and Norway, and paints in many rosemaling styles. She is a Vesterheim Gold Medalist and has been painting since 1977. She’s also a woodcarver, having studied acanthus carving with woodworker Hans Sandom and others. Vesterheim offers a 60% discount for in-person class tuition on a space-available standby basis to any year-round resident living within 50 miles of Vesterheim. Students will be notified about the availability of an opening in the class 21 days before the starting date of the class period. Discounts do not include materials fees. If local area residents want a guaranteed place in a class, they must pay regular class tuition. The local standby option is supported by Decorah’s Depot Outlet.
