South Bear Pottery School is of direct lineage to the Bauhaus,
Marguerite Wildenhain, and Pond Farm; this program implements the same
forms and traditions passed down from that lineage. We offer hands-on
experiences that connect art, nature, and community. Learn to make pots in the European guild tradition. This program
includes high-quality instruction by South Bear alumni, and imparts the
benefits of learning to throw on handmade traditional kickwheels.
The teachings that inform this program have been passed down for six
centuries from Master to Apprentice. Students will learn the basic
practices and forms of pottery and what it means to work with clay in a studio setting.
Days begin with morning gathering, then demonstration and work time, a
morning break where guests and students share lectures, poetry, stories,
and more; after lunch break we finish out the day working again on the
kickwheel.
The program is hosted at South Bear School in Driftless Northeast Iowa in the
beautiful month of June, where one can explore spring wildflowers and camp in the pasture. Options also for lodging in town.
