Vesterheim invites everyone to celebrate Syttende Mai, Norway’s Constitution Day! In 2026, Vesterheim is celebrating early on May 15!Syttende Mai (May 17th) is the day Norway ratified its constitution in 1814 at Eidsvoll and Norwegians celebrate with excited crowds—especially children—marching through the streets, waving flags, and singing songs.Vesterheim’s celebration includes free admission all day with a Children’s Parade throughout Vesterheim Heritage Park, performances, treats, and more.Vesterheim’s Syttende Mai activities are supported by a generous gift to the Vesterheim Annual Fund from Marvin Bruha.2026 Schedule9 a.m.-5 p.m.: Free museum admission10:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m.: Woodworking demonstrations with Rebecca Hanna in the Museum Store10:45-11:45 a.m.: Guided tour of the historic buildings in Heritage Park11 a.m.-1:30 p.m.: Photo Ops with Nils the Giant Nisse behind Hanson Vesterheim Commons11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m.: Hands-on crafts behind Hanson Vesterheim Commons12-12:45 p.m.: Performance with Erik Sessions (fiddle) and Joshua Vorvick (guitar, vocals) in Hanson Vesterheim CommonsThey have performed around the region for almost a decade and have worked up a special set of Scandinavian tunes, from ancient melodies to Nordic Roots favorites to traditional Norwegian-American dance numbers. Concert supported by Bob and Mary Jane Lake.1 p.m.: Children’s Parade throughout Vesterheim Heritage Park. Norwegian flags will be given to children. Line up near museum entrance1-1:45 p.m.: Free ice cream treats provided on Mill St. near Bethania Church with support from Decorah’s Sugar Bowl. Non diary option available1:30 p.m.: A welcome from Chris Johnson, Vesterheim President/CEO, and a performance by the Nordic Dancers on Mill St. near Bethania Church. Bring your own lawn chair if you’d like a seat.In case of inclement weather, the parade and Nordic Dancers will be canceled.All other activities will continue as planned.
