Varafell Weaving on a Warp-Weighted Loom with Marta Kløve Juuhl

July 28, 2025 - August 1, 2025

9am-5pm

Discover the ancient art of Varafell weaving, a traditional Viking-age technique closely related to rya weaving. Instead of yarn, this method uses wool locks as floss, creating a thick, warm, and durable textile. The Varafell, a warm shaggy-piled woven cloak, dates back to medieval times and was traditionally woven on a warp-weighted loom. In this class, students will learn to weave Varafell on a warp-weighted loom, exploring the historical techniques used by the Norse people.

To create a Varafell, locks of coarser outer wool from the Icelandic sheep are knotted into the warp as the fabric is woven into a twill design.  Through hands-on practice, students will gain an understanding of how these unique textiles were crafted for warmth and protection, while connecting with the rich heritage of Viking-era weaving.

The instructor for this course is Marta Kløve Juuhl, a Norwegian native who has 27 years of experience teaching weaving and art history at the high school level. After her teaching career, she spent 10 years as a textile curator at Osterøy Museum. She has maintained her own weaving studio since 1989. She has also authored two books on the subject of weaving and textile arts.

Scholarships including local standby option are available. Find information here.
