History Book Discussion

The History Book Group will meet on the second floor of the library on Thursday November 19 at 3:00 p.m. to discuss the first half of The Rush: California Gold, the Civil War, and the Making of the Modern World by Nathaniel Philbrick.  Philbrick traces how the California Gold Rush transformed the nation’s economy and politics while intensifying conflicts over slavery. Through the experiences of fortune seekers, Native communities, and political rivals, he explores the human consequences of a scramble for wealth that helped push the country toward civil war. A discussion of the second half of the book will follow on Thursday December 17.
